attendance & makeup policy: the "why"

One of the things that makes private music lessons so special is that your child has a lesson time reserved exclusively for them each week. Your tuition reserves that place in our teaching schedule and ensures that we are available for your family throughout the school year. Rather than paying only for the individual lessons attended, tuition secures a consistent weekly appointment and the continuity that helps students thrive.

The lesson itself is only one part of what your tuition provides. Behind every lesson is time spent planning, preparing individualized materials, communicating with families regarding billing, scheduling, and advising on instrument and music purchases, organizing recitals and studio events, attending off-site student competitions and school district events, updating the studio website with the latest information, and continuing professional development to provide the highest quality instruction possible. Tuition supports an ongoing educational partnership, not simply the 30 to 60 minutes spent together each week.

This approach is similar to many other appointment-based professions. Tutors, therapists, coaches, and many healthcare providers reserve time exclusively for each client. Because that time cannot usually be filled at the last minute, attendance and cancellation policies are a standard part of maintaining a healthy practice. Because your child's lesson time has been reserved exclusively for them, it usually cannot be offered to another student on short notice. When a lesson is missed, that reserved appointment time is still part of the studio schedule and cannot simply be replaced.

Private music instruction is also different from many other activities because every lesson is individually scheduled and tailored to each student. If every missed lesson were automatically made up, those lessons would need to be added to late evenings, weekends, holidays, or family time. Over the course of a year, that quickly becomes unsustainable and makes it more difficult to bring the same energy, preparation, and enthusiasm to every student.

A consistent attendance policy also helps ensure that every family is treated equally. If make-up lessons were routinely offered for vacations, sports, birthday parties, and other planned absences, some families would end up receiving additional teaching appointments beyond their regularly scheduled lesson time simply because their schedules allowed them to reschedule more often. By having one policy that applies to everyone, each student receives the same opportunity and the same commitment from their teachers.

Perhaps most importantly, consistency is one of the greatest predictors of musical success. Students who attend lessons regularly develop stronger practice habits, make steadier progress, and build confidence week after week. Protecting your child's lesson time helps establish the routine that leads to long-term growth.

Ultimately, a sustainable studio benefits everyone. Clear, consistent policies reduce scheduling challenges and allow us to focus our time and energy where it belongs—helping each student grow as a musician.

Of course, life happens. Illnesses and genuine emergencies are part of life, and when advance notice is given, we will always do our best to find a make-up lesson. While we can't promise that an alternate time will always be available, we hope this policy reflects a balance of understanding and respect for everyone's time.
